Has social media (i.e., TikTok) changed the perception of Solo Travel/backpacking?

As of recently, I’ve noticed a trend occurring on TikTok and other social media outlets changing the perception of what it means to Solo Travel and backpack in general. Many moons ago, I did my first solo trip to Europe and my perception was much different than what’s advertised now. When I did it, I assumed it was the adventure of going through different cultures and languages, wandering aimlessly on a budget since I was a backpacker. Staying at hostels, splurging on food/excursions every so often because again, I was a backpacker and was on a budget. But it was okay, because I was just grateful to be there after a year of saving.

But what I’ve noticed recently is that trend is changing. I started to use TikTok last year and the amount of videos I see of people 18-24 absolutely splurging on a solo trip/backpacking through Europe is different than what I remember back in 2017. The perception that “backpacking” Europe for example means beach clubs in Mykonos, clubs in Ibiza, yacht parties in Dubrovnik, and lake views in Lake Cuomo.

I guess social media shows the 1% of what really happens when you solo travel or backpack. But I just think about what’s advertised to someone planning their first trip, kind of like me six years ago. My perception was save like hell to complete your dreams on a budget. Now I just think that the perception has changed.

I don’t know, maybe every else has a trust fund lol
